We'll say something most companies won't: some jobs are fine to DIY. Patio furniture, trash cans, a small walkway — go for it. But for a full house wash, a driveway you want done right, or anything involving a ladder, the numbers and the risk change fast. Here's the honest breakdown.

The honest comparison
| DIY | Professional | |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment | Day rental or a consumer electric unit, plus nozzles, cleaner and hose | Commercial rig: high water volume, hot water, surface cleaner, soft wash system |
| Your time | Most of a full day — pickup, setup, washing, cleanup, return | Zero. Typical residential job done in a few hours |
| Results | Consumer machines lack the volume for deep, even cleaning; wand stripes are common | Even, stripe-free finish; growth killed at the root so it stays clean longer |
| Damage risk | On you — stripped paint, cracked stucco, etched concrete, water behind siding | On us — licensed, insured, trained on the right pressure per surface |
| Roof & 2nd story | Don't. Pressure ruins shingles, and ladder + kicking wand is how people get hurt | Soft washed safely with the right equipment |
The number everyone gets wrong: PSI vs GPM
Box-store machines advertise big PSI numbers. But PSI isn't what cleans — water volume (gallons per minute) does most of the work. A consumer machine pushes a fraction of the flow of a commercial rig, which is why a DIY driveway takes hours and still shows stripes while a pro's surface cleaner leaves an even finish in a fraction of the time. Add hot water for grease and gum, and it's not the same job at all.
The repair math
One cracked window seal, one chewed-up stucco patch, or one paint touch-up from a bad wand pass typically costs more than the professional wash you were saving on. And water forced behind siding doesn't show up until months later. That's the risk column people leave out of the DIY math.
When DIY makes sense
- Small, flat, ground-level areas — a patio, a short walkway, furniture
- You already own a machine and know your nozzles
- Nothing delicate nearby — no screens, fresh paint, or landscaping you love
When to call it in
- Full house wash — siding and stucco need soft washing, not pressure
- Anything on or near the roof — never pressure wash shingles
- Driveways and pool decks you want stripe-free
- Pavers you plan to seal — prep quality decides how the sealer looks
- Any two-story home in Orlando, Clermont, Windermere or Horizon West — the ladder isn't worth it

Quick answers
Is it cheaper to pressure wash my own house? For one rental day vs one visit, sometimes. Count solutions, your Saturday, weaker results and any damage, and the gap closes or flips. And siding shouldn't be pressure washed at all.
What goes wrong most often with DIY? Etched stripes in concrete, stripped paint, torn screens, and water behind siding. We see it weekly.
How long does a pro job take? Most house-plus-driveway jobs are done in a few hours. You keep your weekend.
